Clutches and brakes

In the industrial areas a lot of clutches and brakes are used. For example brakes on the backside of an electromotor, if you would like the installation to stop. But also in cases where a certain part of the machine should turn just under certain circumstances.  Torntransmissions, or for example during startup of a steamturbine.

Stemin has a very wide programme in these products.

Brakes are used in may different ways. Brake disks, brakedrums, but also with the use of magnetism, induction. Brakes are used to create a tension in material (winding paper, fibers, of foil) but also for safety. When somebody goes through a safety lightscreen, or just with one hand, the safety of the machine must be guaranteed according to CE norms. The moving parts must stop before somebody can be injured. Because it has to do with safety, you want to be sure, that it works. Therefore fail-safe brakes are developed. This means, when all things fail, the system should brake.

To be able to brake, you need something to activate the brake. To activate a brake, you could use mechanical force, but also, pressure, magnetism, induction, pneumatic, hydraulic or elektric force.

When braking or clutching you need to know the time of switching. During the switch, you need to add or remove kinetic energy. The amount of energy must be calculated. The amount of energy is depending of the revolutions and the moments of inertia.

There are also many special executions of brakes and clutches. Think of automatic clutching in only one direction (freewheels) like in the wheel of your bicycle. Or automatic braking in one direction, a backstop. These are used many times on elevators or conveyors, where a product must be brought to a higher altitude. Or when you are working in the pick and place business, and want to pick only one product every time, you could use a clutch-brake combination.

A special brake combination is a one revolution coupling, where the transmission makes always a certain stroke. These kinds of products are used in sheetfeeders or printers, to pick the upper sheet.
